![]() I would be interested to see what scores (modern or otherwise) musicians have, and how they handled 6/4 meter. ![]() I don't think that a performer would have any problem figuring out half rest followed by three quarter rests followed by a quarter note (or two 8th notes). I have used it once in a string quartet, and I believe that I avoided all instances of dotted half rests. Most of us avoid dotted quarter rests in any meter, but a few of us (myself included, perhaps) that dotted quarters may be appropriate in 9/8 meter and 12/8 meter but not in 6/8 meter. No one has any problem, as far as I can tell with dotted 8th rests. Here we go again discussing what is proper and modern use of dotted rests. I think it's largely a matter of taste.Īlso note that in12/8, if you enter a dotted quarter and then leave the measure, Finale fills the rests as a dotted half, THEN a dotted quarter, which is the wrong way round.įinale 2012, 2Ghz iMac 2Ghz MacBook, 10.7.2Įdirol FA-66 M-Audio Oxygen 61 Yamaha PSR-410 I use dotted half rests in 12/8 and 6/4, but don't dot quarter rests. If you want Finale to dot rests automatically, set the quantization setting "allow dotted rests in compound meters." How to get there varies from version to version. OSX 10.6.4, Finale 2011c w/GPO & JABB, Patterson Plug-Ins, TG-Tools and QuickKeys 4 Sibelius 6, Logic Studio 8, Adobe CS3, FontLab Studio 5, FontExplorer X Pro Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, RME Hammerfall DSP Multiface, Samsung SyncMaster 245b In this case, if you have exactly half a measure of rest it would be appropriate to use a half rest + a quarter rest.ġ5" MacBook Pro 2.6 Ghz. In the rarer case of a 6/4 measure divided as 2/4+2/4+2/4, it would be appropriate to use three half rests to clarify the division in a similar manner. This makes the 3/4+3/4 division totally clear (in the same way, a 6/8 measure usually is divided by two dotted quarter rests). The convention (at least by modern standards) is to use a dotted half rest for half-bar rest in 6/4. I always correct that stuff, and would go for the dotted whole in your example. ![]() Any suggestions?īy default, Finale would also place a quarter and eighth rest on the second beat of the 6/8. if you just have one note at the end of the bar you end up with one half rest and three quarter rests). Personally I prefer half rest + quarter rest, but it can easily become difficult to read (eg. ![]() In 6/4, if you have a half-bar rest, is it better to use a dotted half rest or a half rest + a quarter rest? Finale does the latter when it automatically inserts rests. I have a little question for which I could not find a satisfying answer.
